Our Instructor

My name is Holly McWilliams

My journey with horses began at the age of 10 when I first started taking Western riding lessons. I transitioned to English riding during my college years, where I joined both equestrian teams at my school. I started out as a Criminal Justice major but after learning my college had an Equine Management program I promptly switched majors, leading me to earn an honors degree in Equine Management from Parkland College.

My teaching career took root at Camp Tapawingo with the Girl Scouts, where I discovered my love for sharing my knowledge and passion for horses with others. Upon moving to Iowa with my husband and beloved horse Sox, I founded HM Riding Academy out of both necessity and a long-held dream to establish my own barn and lesson program. While that dream remains on the horizon, I'm currently privileged to operate out of Skunk River Equestrian Center, where I am grateful to the barn owner and fellow boarders for their warm welcome and support.

Sox and I have shared countless adventures, from Western disciplines like barrels and trail classes to our explorations in English riding and attempts at jumping, before finding our true passion in Dressage. My dedication to continuous learning and improvement in all things equestrian is evident in my pursuit of my own lessons, clinics, certifications, and diverse equine programs.

As an instructor, I find immense joy in guiding my students towards not only mastering riding skills but also forging deep connections with their horses. I believe in a patient approach that allows for thorough understanding and meaningful relationships between riders and their equine partners. Looking ahead, I anticipate many more years of sharing my love for horses and nurturing the equestrian journeys of my students.
